We receive many first-time physical therapy patients who come in thinking their treatments will be painful, uncomfortable, or even unbearable due to their condition. However, that is not the case at all!

Our physical therapists have several tools in their arsenal that are meant to relieve your pain while improving your body’s function. Are you looking to ease some discomfort and heal at the same time? If so, contact Elliott Physical Therapy today to set up a consultation!

How does manual therapy work?

Manual therapy is just one tool in a physical therapist’s kit that allows them to free up joint motion and alleviate tension in the soft tissues with nothing more than their hands. Unlike a massage you get at a spa, this specialized form of treatment helps in the following ways:

  • Improve circulation to aid healing
  • Minimize and reduce swelling
  • Free up restrictions like adhesions and scar tissue
  • Improve joint mobility
  • Alleviate muscle tension
  • Reduce pain

Our physical therapist will use targeted manual techniques to enhance your rehabilitation and help your body move more freely!

Are there different types of manual physical therapy?

There are many different types of manual therapy techniques, each with its own unique approach and focus. Here is a list of some of the most common manual therapy techniques used in physical therapy:

  • Soft Tissue Mobilization – This is a general term that refers to a variety of manual therapy techniques that aim to release tension and improve mobility in soft tissues. These are meant to be more therapeutic rather than a relaxing massage.

Our physical therapists use soft tissue mobilization treatments to break up adhesions and scar tissue caused by injuries, surgery, or chronic conditions. These techniques are also used as a supplement to calm areas of tension and allow you to perform a stretch or exercise to get the lasting results you’re looking for.

  • Joint Mobilization – This manual therapy technique involves the therapist moving your joint(s) to improve overall mobility and reduce pain. It is often used to treat joint stiffness and immobility after sustaining an injury or having surgery.

Our physical therapists are trained in loosening restricted joints by applying pressure at different velocities and forces. Mobilization and manipulation techniques are safe, effective, and typically painless, allowing for an increased range of motion and the breakdown of the joint’s barrier.

  • Manual Traction and Distraction Techniques – When our physical therapists perform manual traction, they will apply gentle force to a certain area of the body to stretch it out. This technique helps to “gap” the joint, allowing for more freedom in the joint with less pain. While the neck is the most common area for manual traction, it can also be performed on other parts of the body, including the joints in your arms and legs (aka distraction techniques).

One of our physical therapists will determine which techniques are right for you, depending on your specific needs. All techniques are followed up with an exercise plan.

How will manual therapy fit into my treatment plan?

Manual Therapy can reduce pain which provides a window of opportunity to introduce gentle prescriptive movements that flush out swelling and start to restore strength and mobility.

Your treatment plan will likely include several different therapies, all aimed at helping a specific function of your body. Manual therapy works great as a supplement to your individualized exercise plan. Some exercises may focus on improving your balance and strength, while others may focus on increasing your range of motion. Manual therapy is a crucial part of a treatment plan, as it helps to reduce pain and swelling, minimize inflammation, and increase range of motion.
