Sometimes, the discomfort in your back may seem like a constant companion, refusing to part ways with you. Fortunately, with the right guidance and effort, you can find a way to alleviate your pain. So, let’s take the first step on this promising journey together!

Understanding the Root Causes of Back Pain

The first step to saying goodbye to back pain is understanding what causes it. It might be due to a sedentary lifestyle, an old injury, or even just daily wear and tear. No matter the reason, understanding the root causes is your key to finding the solution.

The most common causes of back pain and reduced mobility that our physical therapists frequently treat include the following:

  • Muscle Strain or Ligament Sprain: Repeated heavy lifting or sudden awkward movements can strain the muscles and spinal ligaments. If you’re in poor physical condition, constant strain on your back can lead to painful muscle spasms and limited movement.
  • Bulging or Herniated Discs: Discs, the cushions between your vertebrae, can bulge or herniate and press on a nearby nerve which may cause pain, but also numbness, tingling, or weakness that affects how you move.
  • Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, the discs between the vertebrae naturally wear down. When one is significantly worn, it can cause pain and stiffness that make everyday activities harder.
  • Spinal Stenosis: This condition results from a narrowing of the spinal canal, which puts pressure on the nerves. It doesn’t always cause pain for many people, the first sign is a loss of function, such as weakness, numbness, or difficulty walking or standing for extended periods.
  • Sports-Related Stress Injuries: Repetitive bending, twisting, or extension, common in running, golf, gymnastics, and contact sports can lead to stress fractures (spondylolysis) or joint irritation in the spine. These injuries are especially common in active adults and young athletes, and often show up as pain or restricted movement during specific activities.

Remember, it’s always advised to consult with our physical therapist for personalized advice. We’ll work with you to identify the exact cause of your back pain or loss of function and recommend the right treatment to help you move and feel your best.

Effective Strategies: to a Healthy Spine

At the beginning of your healing journey, you’ll meet with one of our physical therapists who are like detectives for your body. They’ll chat with you, learn about your pain, and do a thorough physical examination to determine what’s causing your back troubles.

Once they’ve gathered all the clues, they craft a personalized treatment plan just for you! This isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal; it’s tailored to suit your unique needs, helping you bounce back quicker and stronger and includes the following:

  • Strengthening Exercises: With a series of strengthening exercises, your therapist will teach you how to build a strong, resilient back that can handle the stresses of your day-to-day life. This is the foundation of lasting recovery, the research consistently shows that a strong, well-supported spine is your best protection against recurring pain.
  • Mobility Work: Your therapist will guide you through movements that restore healthy, functional motion in your back, helping you return to the activities you rely on. Keeping your spine moving well is a key part of both recovery and prevention.
  • Targeted Stretches: Your therapist will show you the right ways to stretch, helping you loosen stiff areas and move more comfortably. These stretches complement your strengthening work and keep you feeling your best between sessions.
  • Manual Therapy: Using hands-on techniques, your therapist may gently massage and mobilize your back to ease tight muscles and reduce discomfort. This hands-on work helps create the comfort and mobility that make your active exercises more effective.

Remember, your Elliott Physical Therapy therapists are there with you at every step, cheering you on, answering your questions, and tweaking your plan to ensure you get the best results.

Tips for Strengthening Your Core

If you’ve been troubled by that nagging back pain, we’ve got some good news for you. Sometimes, the road to recovery is as simple as strengthening your core.

The term “core” refers to a group of muscles in your lower back and abdomen. These muscles are like the supporting pillars of your spine, helping you to maintain balance and function. Research has shown that a strong core may protect against back pain.

Some of the most effective core exercises our expert physical therapists often recommend are ones you can do right at home, including:

The Bird Dog

This exercise helps in improving stability and balance. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Start with a hands-and-knee position, keeping your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.
  • Extend one arm forward and the opposite leg backward at the same time, while keeping your spine straight.
  • Hold the position 3-5 seconds before returning to the starting position and alternating to the other side.
  • Repeat for 10 repetitions.

The Plank

This is a great all-round exercise that engages your whole core! Here’s how to nail it:

  • Start on your hands and knees.
  • Extend one leg back then the other so you are in a push-up position, keeping your body straight from head to heels.
  • Hold this position for 10-30 seconds without letting your hips drop.
  • Repeat 3-5 times.

Bridges

Bridges are perfect for strengthening your lower back and glutes. Here’s how they’re done:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground.
  • Lift your hips towards the ceiling, squeezing your glutes at the top.
  • Hold for 10-30 seconds before lowering your hips back down.
  • Repeat 10-20 repetitions.

Not only do these exercises promise to strengthen your core, but they also can help lead to a pain-free back. Remember, consistency is the key, so make it a part of your daily routine.

Community Connections in Action

This month, our team has been busy making a difference both on and off the clock! We enjoyed participating in the Ritual Run Club, connecting with our community while promoting healthy, active lifestyles. We were also proud to have Eric Cardin meet with local teens in South Boston to share injury prevention tips before they began their summer camp jobs. From encouraging movement to educating the next generation on staying safe at work, we’re honored to support the health and well-being of our community every step of the way.

Elliott Physical Therapy Joins “The Flow” — Ritual’s Saturday Wellness Mornings at Park City Southie

There’s nothing more fun than sweating it out in the sun with a few hundred of your friends and neighbors and this summer, Elliott Physical Therapy has been right in the mix.

Every single Saturday from 9AM to noon, Ritual takes over Park City Southie for “The Flow”  a packed morning of movement that runs the gamut from the Ritual Run Club, bootcamp, to pilates, and caps it off with an after-party recovery session. Hundreds of folks roll through to run, lift, flow, and recover under the string lights and blue sky.

Elliott PT has been joining in on the action, setting up on-site to help attendees prevent injuries and recover. The team offers hands-on soft-tissue work to keep everyone moving and feeling good, whether they just logged some miles with the run club or powered through bootcamp.

They also come loaded with goodies branded koozies, recovery massage balls, towels, and more so attendees leave with a little something to keep the good vibes going.

With our newest location right here in Southie at the Iron Works, getting to show up for the local wellness community is exactly the kind of thing Elliott PT loves.

Catch the Elliott PT team back at Park City Southie (411 Dorchester Ave) on Saturday, July 11th and most Saturdays through the fall. Come move, sweat, and recover with the crew. We’ll see you there!
